Operation Bedroll

Since 2015, when Guilford County School(GCS) students learned they were number one in the nation for food insecurity coupled with the statistics that over 60% of our school families are considered low income, many of the youth have used service-learning experiences to improve the issues dealing with poverty and homelessness in their community.

Students at Southeast and Allen Middle School have created a public service announcement (PSA) to assist in collecting plastic bags to make warm bedding for the homeless.  In addition to actually making the bedrolls, these students filmed and developed a Public Service Announcement.

Allen Middle School is one of four schools selected in 2016 to launch GCS Dynamics for Success: An Opportunity to Learn, A Reason to Serve (DFS), a practical framework to support middle school aged youth in developing competencies that transfer to classroom instruction and service-learning experiences.  Through their talents, skills, and genuine passion for others, students are creating the change they wish to see in the world.
