Grimsley high school students in Guilford County recently participated in a Service Learning Project to promote literacy and fight the “book deserts” in their local community. To begin this project their teacher, Kathleen Saunders challenged her students to conduct extensive research into the issue. Students had to collect data, draft evidence based arguments and defend their decisions prior to taking action. Once students met those challenges, they had to recruit sponsors and help draft a grant application.
